Rapiscan

Rapiscan is a pharmacological stress agent used to simulate the effect of exercise (for those who are unable to exercise). It is used in the diagnosis of coronary artery disease, ensuring subsequent treatment is optimised.

Rapiscan was developed specifically to address the needs of nuclear medicine and interventional cardiology by simplifying the pharmacological stress protocol, improving patient tolerability and providing an option for patients with asthma and COPD.

Why surgeons prefer Rapiscan

  • Rapiscan is the only hyperemic pharmacological stress agent approved for the measurement of FFR.
  • Rapiscan is a selective A2A receptor agonist which effectively achieves maximal hyperemia during FFR assessment.
  • Rapiscan can induce maximal hyperemia in 30 seconds and maintains hyperemia from ~ 3 minutes to more than 10 minutes.
  • Rapiscan is well tolerated and is associated with lower degree AV block than adenosine.
  • Single, fixed dose of Rapiscan is administered into a peripheral vein; no dose adjustments are required for weight, elderly, renal or hepatic insufficiency.
  • Rapiscan can also be used in asthmatic patients and those with COPD with caution.

Fractional flow reserve (FFR) is an important tool in the cardiac catheterization lab to assess the physiological significance of coronary lesions. Rapiscan is the only hyperaemic pharmacological stress agent approved for the measurement of FFR.
